VECTOR THE VIPER: NAIJA HIP-HOP/RAP CARRIER? OR SOMETHING DIFFERENT?

Vector is a Latin word meaning “carrier” and undoubtedly the act “Olanrewaju David Ogunmefun” is definitely doing that. Vector stormed the Nigerian Hip-Hop scene with features in tracks like Bigiano’s ‘Shayo remix’ and J Martin’s ‘Good or Bad remix‘before cementing his stake with General Pype’s ‘Champion remix’. His tracks ‘Kilode‘ featuring Emmsong (where he addressed issues of comparison between himself and Jayz) and ‘Mary Jane’ off his debut album ‘State of Surprise’ which was released in 2010 were hits. And let’s not forget ‘Get Down’ featuring 2face which instantly topped all charts and airwaves across the country. Though his album wasn’t an instant hit, it gradually gained momentum like a projectile. Anyways, I’m pretty sure all this ado about this YSG artist is old news to us by now.

The issue or subject of this discussion or review is: What makes vector different? What does he bring to the table that other acts are missing?
In the year under review ‘2012’,Vector has done/featured in over 30 Tom, Dick and Harry’s songs (the “microphone prostitute” as my crazy colleague Kyos would call him :D ) in which he delivered well and if this figure is considered critically in the Nigerian music industry and with his verse(s) put together, V.e.c would have easily been able to release almost 3 albums in the first half of the year (excluding his latest material “Bar Racks [The Mixtape]“)

Let’s assess V.e.c on different criteria, shall we:
LYRICAL CONTENT:  When lines like; ‘We all know he rolls with ‘Terry Tha Rapman’ and ‘Pheroshuz’. He said Big Girl I’m bogus, I’m confident, I’m focus, my lines are kobetery, The Rapman, They are Pheroshuz’ – SPIN (O Fe Pa Mi) – Dj Jimmy Jatt, Tenim
Vec is a beast & Sauce is an animal; look where we at – now you seen zoo (Sinzu)” –Sauce Kid Ft. Vector (Kitchen Street)
These lines show how much V.e.c is willing to think outside the box. The way he combines the animal references to depict zoo and Sinzu at the same time, shows both intelligence and skillful wordplay: now that’s rhythm and poetry (an acronym for rap by the way).
Vector realized that people relate more to “name calling” and “similes” in rap and this he has stuck to as his ACT. Where a ‘Wale‘ would go deep and say a line like “talk about the cars you gat, you say you gat a lot buh i say i gat a LOT(PARKING LOT)“, Vector prefers to stay plain (sometimes deep but simple) with the following lines:
1. Our chics looking like “Ini Edo“…………..We’re Made Oh
2. So many girls,i can’t choose, our spot is the GAL-LERIA..”Murray Bruce“………….Get Down ft 2face
3. Ni bi lo ma ku si, bo ya lo ma “DELE“, sey bami ni “MOMODU“, o ma bami dele..”OVATION“…..Bebedi Alhaja(Sexy Steel ft Vector)
STREET CREDIBILITY:
SLANGS: When slangs like “If I dey Piss you off, Go wee wee”,…that went viral on tees, and are been said/mentioned then attribute is been giving to V.e.c. Also, an artiste that is able to continually come up with this kind off slang(s) that people quickly can relate to is definitely gradually gaining the hearts of the Streets.
GRUNT: If Rick Ross the Boss says “Ugh” then “Vector” would definitely gladly reply with “ONDUN“….hehehehe
NOTE: Am jerking on the BOSS, you can call that a FATman SCOOP……Ondun.
DRESS SENSE/LOOKS:

CorporateVECTOR
Not to take a piss or something but a lot of people don’t relate to the ‘Emi oni she Rapper to ma tokin’ Vector. The prefer and relate more with the tees and jeans Vector which appropriately defines an Hip-hop/Rap act, with them jeans sagging, neck blinging and bars upon bars dropping outta them jars.
Even though he got dissed by Reminisce for his dress sense, you’ve still gotta admire Vector’s bold step to dress maturely, in an industry where old men look like rainbows and American high school kids.

ENDORSEMENT(s):
Even a big brand like Sprite recognizes real. I’m sure you’ve heard the freestyle V.e.c did for Sprite. Although, we do not know how much he was paid (or if he was paid at all), the affiliation of any artist to a world renowned brand like Sprite, speaks volumes to the artist’s appeal.
CONTROVERSY:

ATA(KITCHEN STREET)
There were sparks thrown into the air when Nigerian Artiste Reminisce recorded a diss track”ATA (Street Kitchen Reply)” with the line, “V.E what shit ki lo’n je be. Shebi iwo lo rap ju shit o ma pe’n nbe” in reply to Vector’s verse on Sauce Kid’s “Kitchen Street” in which Vector said “For all those boys wey dey show. Ti e ba fe ma form pe eyin lata ani tomato to ma to“. After this incidence Vector has replied with the track “Distractions (Reminisce Diss)”. A track with him and A.Q on it. Vector hit him with the lines, “Cos you bleach your skin doesn’t mean you are enlightened, Pig. I’m the base and my crew be strong, you cannot be the best cos you had one stupid song“.
MISTAKE:
Mister pass_out Vector, kindly note that “Nobody sleeps with glasses, shades, sunglasses, whatever on“….Get Down video. Even contact lens are advised to be taken off.
CONCLUSION:  So why is everyone queuing up to feature Vector? Simple, you want to give your track a unique edge. An edge you most likely won’t find from most rappers in Nigeria right now. Yes other people might have more punchlines, smoother flow or maybe even better story telling abilities. But one thing’s for sure: no one else has Vector’s “out-of-the-box” wordplay technique. If you’re used to listening to most rappers, chances are that you could complete their lines for them. Hence, there’s no shock value when the spit. But not Vector. With sleek metaphors and peculiar wordplay, Vector is loved and cherished for his unpredictability. Because if you’re predictable, you eventually become boring and we certainly don’t want to be bored. We love him because he offers something different.
